When we suspect that an animal has an ear infection we always recommend an exam for the following reasons:
- We need to confirm that the ear drum has not been ruptured as this affects which medications we can safely use.
- There can be multiple causes of ear infections including bacteria (multiple types), yeast and mites or a combination of more than one. The causes can also change from one exam to the next. The choice of medication and length of treatment is affected by the cause of the infection.
- The ear canal needs to be free of large amounts of wax and discharge if the medication is going to be able to get where it needs to be. We frequently have to clean or flush ears during your appointment.
